Mercedes Schlapp must deal with an administration that is roiled by a variety of concerns, which includes a president who is acting as the president's own communications director and Cabinet Secretaries embroiled in their respective controversies. Schlapp has kept her eye on the target, and has been coordinating policy implementation along with White House staff from the political and legislative affairs team and the policy shop, in addition to broader communication. The first few months, Schlapp has focused on school safety concerns, addiction infrastructure, trade and drug issues. The reporter doesn't get to interact at all in her current job. In March, she received a flurry of media attention when it became widely known that Schlapp was an option to replace Hope Hicks's post as director of communication. The battle has been bitter. Schlapp's close ally, Tony Sayegh as well as an opponent with the same name, Tony, started jousting with each other in the news. When The Washington Examiner published a negative report on Sayegh Schlapp said she called the candidate to be relationship with her.
